Dear Community Member,
FIRST Robotics Competition is an organization that allows high school students to improve their skills in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) with help from community professionals and adult mentors. For six weeks starting in the beginning of January students work to build a robot that will compete with and against teams from surrounding areas in head to head competitions starting at the district level all the way through to the global level. This gives students a taste of the world of STEM.
Introducing The Wire Clippers – Team 5902
Through a collaboration between New Heights and Portsmouth High School our team, The Wire Clippers (Team 5902), was formed and competed in our rookie season in 2016. Now in our fourth year of competition our team has grown to include a team of 23 high school students from Portsmouth and the greater Seacoast community. Our mentors include community members, STEM professionals, a nuclear engineer from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, parents, teachers, college students, and New Heights Staff. Our team has been honored with the Rookie All Star award, Rookie Inspiration award, and the Team Spirit award during our four years.
FIRST Robotics is nominally free for students, but, in order to pay for all of the team’s needs, we charge a fee to join although there is financial aid available. Our funds come from tuition, grants, fundraising activities, and sponsors. We need more sponsors in order to support this build season and the continuation of the team. It costs approximately $15,000 to pay for the materials to build the robot, pay entry fees to the NE FIRST District Events, and attend off-season events. Our sponsors’ logos and names are proudly displayed on our website, team t-shirts and in any press about our team. If you want to sponsor us, please contact our mentor, Wayne Moulton, at email@example.com .
